Literacy rates have been increasing blobally, but there are still many people who are illiterate. In India, successive governments have launached initiatives to improve literacy rates.
Global Literacy Rates
According to UNESCO, more than 86% of the world's population can read and write, up from 68% in 1979.
However, there are still at least 754 million aults who are illiterate and 250 million children who are not acquiring basic literacy skills.

The Indian government has launched several initiatives to improve literacy rates, including the National Literacy Mission (NLM), Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).
